From the Executive Director: Lucky to Work in Local Government
Local Government Academy is responding to recent shifts in funding policies at the federal level to attract some of the best and brightest minds to careers in the public and Non-Profit sectors. Taking what some might call lemons and making lemonade, we are creating exciting new opportunities for internships in local government.
Partnering with the University of Pittsburgh’s Graduate School of Public and International Affairs (GSPIA), Local Government Academy’s Internship Support Program will help GSPIA students who have lost federal internships, or who are still seeking valuable internship experiences, find unique opportunities to work in a local community, developing skills in civil service, Non-Profit management, and project coordination.
This initiative is not intended to replace or replicate the Municipal Intern Program, a Keystone Program of ours, but rather to use our platform and established relationships to increase awareness of career opportunities in local governments, Councils of Governments, and other associated community-building organizations that exist to build municipal capacity and improve the quality of life for everyone.
Building capacity is central to much of our work and we encourage you to get involved in your local community to better understand the roles and responsibilities of our elected officials and municipal workforce. These leaders, many of whom are volunteers, shoulder an immense burden every day to ensure our health, safety and welfare. Most do so because they know they are making a difference in other people’s lives.
